Your dentist wants you to come in for regular dental cleanings & exams. But have you ever wondered why dental cleanings and exams are so important?
What is a Dental Cleaning?
A dental cleaning is not the same as teeth whitening, although your teeth will look better after a thorough dental cleaning. A dental cleaning removes plaque and tartar that has built up on the surface of your teeth and most important, upon exposed root surfaces. The dental cleaning may be done by a dental hygienist, whose work will be in conjunction with a licensed regular dentist.
What is a Dental Exam?
A dental exam is conducted by your dentist. During the exam, the dentist takes a thorough look inside your mouth. The dentist is looking for anything out of the ordinary, on your teeth, gums and around the inside of your mouth, including your tongue. Individual teeth will be carefully examine visually. If necessary, the dentist may take one or more x-rays to determine if there are cavities or infections that need to be treated. The dentist will also check the pockets around the teeth and record the depth of the probe. This helps to ensure that dental disease can be preemptively treated or prevented.
Having regular dental cleanings and exams helps to keep your teeth and gums in as good condition as possible. With regular dental appointments, you can avoid more serious issues later on in life. Just as with regular health checkups, dental cleanings and exams enable you and your dentist to prevent problems before they strike or get serious. Most dentists recommend that you get an exam and cleaning once every four to six months in relation to present and past periodontal information, bone loss and probing depth.
